   GLOSSARY OF TERMS
WHAT IS N.A.?  N.A. is a non-profit Fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem.  We are recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean.  This is a program of complete abstinence from all drugs.
WHAT IS THE N.A. PROGRAM?   The N.A. program is a set of principles written so simply that we can follow them in our daily lives.  The 12 step program is known world wide, the most important thing about them is that they work.  There are no strings attached to N.A.  We are not affiliated with any other organizations, we have no initiation fees or dues, no pledges to sign, no promises to make to anyone.  We are not connected with any political, religious or law enforcement groups, and are under no surveillance at any time.

MEMBERSHIP The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using "mind altering Substances" which includes alcohol and other drugs.  There are no dues or fees for N.A. membership; we are self supporting through our own contributions.  N.A. is not aligned with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; N.A. does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. There is only one requirement for membership, the desire to stop using.  Any one may join us, regardless of age, race, sexual identity, creed, religion or lack of religion.

THE 24 HOUR PLAN We take no pledges, we do not say that we will "never" drink or use drugs again.  Instead, we try to follow what is called in N.A. as the "24 hour plan."  We concentrate on keeping sober just the current 24 hours.  We simply try to get through "one day at a time" without a drink or drug.  If we feel the urge for a drink or use substances, we neither yield nor resist.  We merely put off taking that particular drink or drug until tomorrow.

SPONSOR Members that have made themselves available to new or needy members.  A sponsor will have successfully stayed sober for some time, (usually a year or more) and will help members put into practice the N.A. program of recovery.

OPEN MEETINGS Everyone can attend an open meeting.  An open N.A. meeting may take on one of several forms, but at any meeting you will find chemical users talking about what drug usage did to their lives and personalities, what actions they took to help themselves, and how they are living their lives today.

CLOSED MEETING Advanced members, those members who have a problem with drugs, working on recovery, early and unsure members are not usually members of the closed group.  Those with substantial motivation, activity, and a relationship to the N.A. principles will be attending the closed groups.

N.A. BIG BOOK STUDIES An open meeting that studies the Narcotics Anonymous Big Book containing the philosophy and story of how many thousands of men and women have recovered from alcoholism.  The big book is considered the basic text for our society and has helped men and women in recovery.

THE 12 STEPS Twelve principles around which we live our lives in trying to put into practice the N.A. program of recovery.
